Background and Goals

The main goal of the Cypress Creek Project is to ensure that the long-term integrity and sustainability of the Cypress Creek watershed is preserved and that water quality standards are maintained for present and future generations. The multi-phase project seeks to define the current state of the watershed, gather input from community stakeholders, and develop a science-based tool for local decision makers.

Texas Stream Team Activities in Cypress Creek

The Texas Stream Team has long supported monitoring efforts in the Cypress Creek Watershed, including Jacob's Well, Blue Hole, and on the main stem of Cypress Creek. Adding to the program's previous efforts, the Texas Stream Team trained several Hays County Master Naturalists and concerned citizens at the February training at Texas State, leading to the establishment of several new monitoring sites in the Wimberley area. Again in July 2008, a training certified 17 participants as volunteer water quality monitors. 11 of the participants live in Wimberley. Many are Cypress Creek waterfront property owners. Several new monitoring sites were established in the watershed as a result of the training, adding to the Upper Blanco (including Lone Man and Cypress) sites created since February 2008.

Due to the leadership and commitment of the Upper Blanco monitoring group, Texas Stream Team has one full-fledged certified volunteer trainer as well as two trainers in the process of completing their training in Wimberley. With 3 trainers in place in the watershed, Texas Stream Team's ability to train interested volunteers is greatly increased.

The Wimberley area monitoring group has received support from The Nature Conservancy – Blanco River Project. To date, TNC has purchased one complete set of monitoring equipment for the group, including E. coli monitoring supplies. Texas Stream Team donated several kits and incubators to the group. GBRA has committed to supplying reagents and standards to the group in support of their efforts.
